A 2023 NFL Draft prospect was involved in a fatal car accident in Alabama on Sunday and had to undergo multiple surgeries, his agent said.
Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns wide receiver Michael Jefferson was considered a mid-round pick when the draft begins in late April.
But sadly, the draft is not the top priority right now. His agent told ESPN that Jefferson has serious injuries from the car accident in Mobile. The nature of those injuries has not been disclosed.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash when Alabama police arrived, according to TMZ. He was a 55-year-old man in a 2014 Dodge Charger who was not wearing a seatbelt when he collided head-on with Jefferson’s 2019 Chevy Impala. That collision caused a 2008 Nissan Maxima to also strike Jefferson’s vehicle.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the accident.

A 6-foot-4, 199-pound receiver, Jefferson had a strong senior season with the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2022. He had 51 receptions for 810 yards with seven touchdowns in 12 games.
In his career at Louisiana-Lafayette, he totaled 1,291 yards on 69 receptions with 11 touchdowns.

At the NFL Draft Scouting Combine, Jefferson posted a dash time of 4.56 seconds for 40 yards with a split of 1.52 seconds for 10 yards. He also displayed a vertical jump of 37 inches and a long jump of 11 feet 1 inch.

«Jefferson is a tall target with build speed and a receiving style that gets better the farther he gets from the line,» NFL.com Draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote. «He doesn’t have the short-box quickness to fend off NFL pressure effectively and could struggle to break through against tight man coverage in the first two levels. He has decent ball skills and works in the zones effectively , but he’s going to have a challenging time making an NFL roster.»

Jefferson received an NFL Draft rating of 5.69, which is classified as a «bottom-roster or practice-team candidate.»
