2022 was a big year for new and returning Netflix Originals, and with subscriber demand for more content more voracious than ever, some won’t be happy to learn that some of Netflix’s biggest shows are unlikely to return in 2023. Here’s why.
The hardest part of loving an ongoing series is waiting in limbo for new seasons. And while the wait seems incredibly long, there are many factors to consider when looking forward to a new season of your favorite show.
From awaiting the network’s decision to order a new season, the hard work begins at the beginning of active development with the writing of the script. Then move into pre-production, before principal photography begins, with a shooting schedule that can last up to several months, sometimes longer, and can take place in locations hundreds of miles away, sometimes thousands. Once filming is complete, a lengthy post-production process takes place to ensure all visual and special effects are complete, along with the editing process.
Even when a series is complete and ready for release, any release date is entirely determined by the network’s or streaming service’s schedule. Not to mention, depending on a series’ popularity, Netflix may push an extensive marketing campaign in the weeks leading up to a show’s return.
When you consider all of the factors mentioned above, it’s not hard to see why some of your favorite shows are taking a long time to come back.
Netflix original dramas will not return in 2023
There was a three-year wait between the third and fourth seasons of Strange things. Thankfully, fans of Netflix’s flagship series won’t have to wait as long for the fifth and final season.
Filming for the fifth season will begin sometime in 2023 and it is expected to premiere in 2024.

Perhaps a victim of the global pandemic, the third season of The Umbrella Academy did not strike the same chord with the public as the previous two seasons. Hoping to make up for a superior ending to the show, The Umbrella Academy’s final season will film throughout 2023 and premiere sometime in 2024.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that the series’ executive producer, Steve Blackman, has previously stated in the past that each season of The Umbrella Academy takes approximately up to 18 months to produce.
The fact that we haven’t seen a second season of Ratched on Netflix is already a big surprise to many. Not only because the series was popular with subscribers, but when the show was first greenlit, it was ordered for two seasons. There has been little to no talk about the future of Ratched, and as far as we know, filming for a second season has not begun.
However, with Netflix continuing their relationship with producer Ryan Murphy, there’s always a chance we could see some progression for the series in 2023.
Netflix left many of us worried that The Sandman would not be renewed for a second season. Fortunately, those fears were put to rest when the renewal was finally confirmed.
The pandemic forced the production of the first season to take much longer than expected, so with the removal of many restrictions, the filming of the second season will be much shorter. However, the post-production process was incredibly lengthy, and the time between the start of post-production and the release of The Sandman was almost twelve months.
No movie schedule for the second season has been released, so we can only assume that production will begin sometime later this year. However, that means there isn’t enough time for the series to hit Netflix in 2023.
The best-performing Netflix Original of all time, fans have been incredibly patient waiting for the highly anticipated second season of squid game.
Subscribers will need to be patient as filming for the second season has yet to begin and is not expected to begin until later this year.
Squid Game Season 2 is expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
The best-performing Netflix original of 2022, Wednesday, took the world by storm in November. Surprisingly, Netflix is taking longer than expected to renew one of its best new shows, but we hope to hear more about a renewal soon.
That said, once the show is renewed, there’s no guarantee that filming will begin in the next few months, as cast members like Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers are currently busy filming other projects. All of the cast’s schedules will need to line up for production to begin on the next season, which we wouldn’t expect until later this year.
