A Florida sheriff’s sergeant allegedly punched a referee during a children’s soccer game and was arrested Tuesday.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Russell, who has been removed from office, was arrested on felony assault on a sports official, Sheriff TK Waters said. via WJXT-TV.

Waters held a press conference to detail the arrest, noting that even though Russell is one of their own, no one is above the law.

«We never like to arrest an employee of this agency,» he said. «However, our collective belief in transparency, openness and responsibility trumps any personal loyalty. We are a society of laws and no one is above those laws.»

The alleged incident with Russell occurred Sunday morning while he was off duty at the game. A fight had broken out between the players of both teams and the referees tried to stop it by blowing her whistles and standing in the middle of the players.

However, Russell felt the need to go out on the field and hit one of the referees, Waters explained. There didn’t seem to be any explanation as to why.

«It’s really confusing for me. It’s disappointing,» Waters said.

Russell has been a member of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for 14 years, but Waters mentioned that an «administrative review» will come for him after the criminal investigation comes to an end.

Although Russell was removed from his position as a homicide sergeant, he remains on the job during the sheriff’s office investigation.
